ABOUT THE CENTER

The transformation of health care in the Bronx depends on your help.

Urgent Care Center

What happens when you need medical attention, but not emergency care, after hours on the weekend? The Urgent Care Center at SBH will provide same-day appointments and walk-in-services for adults and children ages 5 and older who are in need of medical care that is not an emergency. This includes patients with illnesses and injuries, and may range from a bad sore throat to a sprained or broken ankle. Diagnostic testing, including x-rays and blood tests, will also be available.

You will be able to make an appointment, or simply walk in.

Pediatric and Adolescent Center

Here, our providers deliver the most up-to-date care in treating patients from infancy through college. Your children will be treated with compassion in a nurturing environment, whether they are here for school physicals, vaccinations, or sick visits. In the Adolescent Center, we will see patients 12 and up, with the goal of helping young men and women face unique challenges at a time when their bodies, their personal relationships, and their emotions are constantly changing. This means creating a safe space to help them on this journey, while answering any questions and concerns they may have along the way.

Our Philosophy calls for treating the whole child. This means tending to their physical, emotional and social development needs in providing both illness-related and preventative care.

Women’s Health Center

The Women’s Health Center provides patients with treatment, prevention, screening and educational services for a full range of women’s health services. This can range from breast health to prenatal care to urogynecology. We offer state-of-the-art imaging services in a private and comfortable setting. This includes the use of 3D mammography, which has been shown to detect more than 40 percent more invasive cancers and reduces false positives by up to 40 percent.

This is particularly important for women who live in underserved communities like the South/Central Bronx. Since early detection is key, the use of technology like 3D mammography – which allows doctors to see masses and distortions associated with cancers significantly more clearly than with conventional 2D mammography – can play a critical role in serving our population.

By examining breast tissue layer by layer, the new technology provides far greater accuracy than conventional mammography (regardless of a women’s age or breast density). Whereas existing technology provides doctors with a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional breast – and so can result in unclear findings, false alarms and, most importantly, missed cancer – the new 3D mammography makes fine details more visible. The new technology also uses very low x-ray energy during the exam, about the same as a film-screen mammogram. The exam itself is similar to the conventional 2D exam.
